How I Grow My Hair & Keep It Healthy (Tips & Tricks)
Well, hi hair post, nice to finally see you! I’ve been meaning to get around to this for the past two weeks (*insert eye roll emoji*) and finally here we are with the goods. I seem to get a lot of questions regarding my hair: If it’s real, how I get it cut, the products I use and how I got it to grow so long. So here I am to share all my tips and hopefully, you’ll find them helpful!
“Is That All Yours?” (Do I wear Extensions *LENGTH & THICKNESS*)
It sure is! The Good Lord gave a thick head of hair and it’s been that way since I can remember! I’ve never worn extensions (not because I don’t think they look good but because my hair seriously grows like a weed on its own lol) and although I do think that there are things you can do/take to promote hair growth, I haven’t ever taken any! I do know friends that have had success with Biotin supplements but you do have to make sure you are consistent with taking them and it takes some time to see progress.
“What keeps your hair so healthy/shiny?” | “What’s your hair routine?”
This one is my favorite because I really feel like I have some great tips and products to keep your hair super healthy and shiny! And this basically comes with a good hair routine.
MY ROUTINE: Wash (with scalp brush or scrub) | Mask (once a week) | Condition | Towel Dry | Hair Oil | Air Dry (I only blowdry once a week at most | Dry Shampoo (don’t go overboard so you minimize buildup but enough for oil reduction) for about 3 days then repeat the process! *I only break this if I have an event or place I need to be and I want clean hair*
For starters, try to limit the heat on your hair as much as possible. You can do this by not washing as often ( so that styling isn’t as frequent) and using dry shampoo! Here are a few I LOVE.
When washing is needed, make sure you are using a shampoo & conditioner combo that really nourishes your hair. Ingredients are SO important. Briogeo & Alterna are two brands I really love and that in turn show love to your hair! Those inexpensive shampoos/conditioners may smell good and be cheap, but many have chemicals that actually strip your hair of its natural oils leaving you (although clean) worse off than before. Add in the heat and you have a recipe for dryness and damage (which leads to breakage). I promise IT IS WORTH IT to splurge a bit on your shampoos and you will be able to tell the difference! Here are a few shampoos I love:
After you shampoo, about once a week I use a hair mask. They make the biggest difference in shine and health! These two hair masks are INSANE. I can’t even explain how soft and amazing your hair feels after using. DON’T sleep on hair masks! They are so necessary! I Do one at least once a week! If you get oily quickly just use these on your ends and stay away from your scalp! Here are a few hair masks I love:
Scalp health is another important aspect of hair health that I feel like gets totally overlooked. Your hair literally grows from the scalp, so why not nourish that and give it some love too? I use a scalp brush and I love using scalp scrubs as well. The seriously are amazing and I have heard using these does promote circulation and exfoliation which in turn helps with growth! A win-win there! Here is a scalp brush I love and a few scalp scrubs!
Lastly, I like to use a hair oil after I towel dry so that my hair (mostly my ends) are really nourished! I have three oils that I use constantly. The Ouai oil is lighter and would definitely be great for someone who has thinner hair! I have to use a few pumps of this one but it works amazing and is great on the ends! The B&B oil smells amazing, is a step up in consistency & thickness and gives that incredible shine. The RedKen I love is thicker so it won’t be great for everyone, but if you have thick hair this one will be perfect for you! One pump and you’re on your way to silky smooth hair! Here are the three I love:
“How often do you cut your hair?” | “What do you ask for?”
Because the above maintenance keeps my hair really healthy, I don’t really have many split ends or tons of damage. I tend to go to the salon when I feel like my hair is getting too long! So not super often ( a few times a year). However, if you are trying to grow your hair & have damage, its better to get that damage trimmed off because if you leave it, it will get worse and lead to breakage that might leave your hair needing a cut way shorter than what you want. When I do get it cut, I like long layers! I don’t ever do anything drastic but I like layers that frame the face. Kate Barone at KBarone Salon did my last cut and it’s probably the best cut I’ve ever gotten!
“What color do you ask for at the salon?”
Its probably been about a year since I had my hair colored (I’m about to head to KBarone again for some color and I CAN’T WAIT) and the picture I’m inserting was done by Katlin at Orbit Salon in Birmingham and she is sooo good too! What I ask for is always a natural beachy balayage! I like the darkness of my natural hair so I don’t want to take it away too much, but I like the lightness around my face!
I hope this post helped to give you some insight into what I do to maintain my hair and keep it healthy! If you have any questions feel free to leave them below!
XOXO,
